Fiscal consolidation inevitable in the Caribbean - says IMF

WASHINGTON, CMC – An International Monetary Fund (IMF) working paper says since growth in the current global economic environment is “virtually nonexistent,” significant fiscal consolidation is inevitable in the region.
The paper, dubbed “The Challenges of Fiscal Consolidation and Debt Reduction in the Caribbean,” examines debt dynamics in the Caribbean and discusses policy options for reducing the high debt levels.
Based on empirical studies of factors underlying global large debt reduction episodes, the paper says “important policy lessons” are drawn for the Caribbean.

New requirements for produce exporters to the USA

IN THE future, producers of fruits and vegetables and their products will be required to identify where any potential hazards can occur, establish control points, monitor how well their systems work and fix problems when they occur.

This is according to Juliana Almeida, a Representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) who spoke at a workshop organised by the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association (BMA) on the “New Requirements and Opportunities to Export Fruit and Vegetables to the USA” held recently at BMA headquarters.

CARICOM Trade Ministers, Portman Agree on Council to Advance Trade Relations

The Caribbean Community deeply appreciates this opportunity to address the Security Council on the situation in Haiti.

One year ago, we were all gravely concerned about deteriorating political and security conditions in Haiti. With Haitian agreement and international support, the Caribbean Community launched a diplomatic initiative. It is with great pleasure that I receive this letter from Secretary of State Colin Powell, designating you as Plenipotentiary Representative of the United States of America to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Mr. Secretary-General, it is an honor for me to be here today to present my credentials as United States Plenipotentiary Representative to the Caribbean Community. The United States enjoys good relations with the countries of the Caribbean Community, so it is appropriate that the U.S. Government have direct representation with the CARICOM Secretariat.

The countries of CARICOM collectively constitute the third border of the United States, and they share strong cultural and historic ties with the U.S.

Interim Summit Pledges Support for Americas-wide
