CARPHA and CTO Launch Tourism and Health Programme in the Region

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, May 06, 2014:  Closures of hotels and cruise ports due to outbreaks of communicable diseases, environmental challenges like climate change, and poor health and wellness in the tourism workforce, can result in significant losses in revenue. These were the major catalysts for the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) partnering to address issues affecting health and tourism in the Caribbean region. 

Caribbean fertility rates low

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - The assumption that the Caribbean is a hotbed of fertility is a fallacy, local experts say.

Rising teenage pregnancies and large families with up to ten children can give a false picture of a highly reproductive population but, with a falling T&T birth rate (currently 15.2 births per year per 1,000 people), the medical director of T&T’s only IVF fertility clinic, Dr Catherine Minto-Bain, says we are just about replacing our population.

New ferry for Trinidad and Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- An additional inter-island ferry will soon be available for passengers to travel back and forth between the sister isles of Trinidad and Tobago.

The government is expected to invest at least $48 million annually to provide this newest service on board the MV Super-Fast Galicia. The service is expected to be a hefty $10 million less than the lease of the TT Warrior Spirit.

New therapy for advanced prostate cancer available in Trinidad and Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division of the Trinidad Tobago Ministry of Health approved the introduction of Abiraterone Acetate to the country, the first-orally administered androgen synthesis inhibitor (testosterone) medication for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

TRINIDAD-SECURITY-Government announces new unit to tackle crime

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government has announced the establishment of a National Security Special Operations Group to deal with criminal activities in the country.

But National Security Minister Gary Griffith made it clear that the new unit comprising, highly trained and specialised people capable of dealing  with hostage negotiation, counter-terrorist activities and gang warfare, was different from the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago (SAUTT) that the coalition government disbanded soon after coming to office in 2010.

TRINIDAD-LABOUR-Port workers embark upon industrial action

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Port workers have downed tools as management and trade union officials were meeting on Tuesday in an effort to end the industrial action that has affected operations at the Port of Port of Spain.

The workers, some of whom have stayed away from the port, have erected red flags on the main road leading to the facility and president general of the Seaman and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU), Michael Annisette has accused management of being less than honest with the workers regarding salary increases.

TRINIDAD-POLITICS-PM denies another resignation from her Cabinet

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has denied reports that Tobago Development Minister Dr. Delmon Baker had resigned from her Cabinet due to allegations of improper conduct.

“That is totally untrue. He remains a member of my government,” she told the NEWSDAY newspaper on Wednesday.

There had been widespread speculation that Baker, a member of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP), one of the four parties in the coalition People’s Partnership government, had submitted his resignation.

TRINIDAD-CRIME-Police arrest businessman as investigations continue into sex allegation against form

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Police Tuesday said they had arrested a 50-year-old businessman during a sting operation as investigations continued into allegations that sacked government minister Dr. Glen Ramadharsingh had a woman perform sexual acts on him when she went for assistance to fast track an application with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

The police said that the businessman from Central Trinidad is expected to be charged with perverting the course of justice.

Robinson has died

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express- Former President and Prime Minister Arthur NR Robinson has died.

Robinson, who had been ailing for several months, passed away at the St Clair medical Centre at around 6 a.m. He was 87.

His passing was confirmed by National Security Minister Gary Griffith who said a State funeral was being planned.

CEBO continues with Training of Trainers Workshop in Trinidad and Tobago

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat led Creativity for Employment and Business Opportunity (CEBO) programme continued with a training of trainers workshop in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday (7 April).

The project which is being funded under the CARICOM- Spain Citizen Security project is intended to enhance the capacity for sustainable livelihoods among youth by introducing CEBO in five Member States, namely, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
