DECLARATION BY HEADS OF GOVERNMENT WAR ON GUNS

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana - Friday, 8 March 2024: Officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) met from 4-6 March at the Community’s Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana, to finalise a joint action plan for their cooperation.
Following the inaugural symposium on Crime and Violence as a Public Health Safety Issue and the Declaration of the Heads of Government in Trinidad and Tobago on 17-18 April 2023, CARICOM Heads of Government met in caucus in Georgetown, Guyana, on 27 February 2024 to discuss the prevailing dire state of crime, violence, and public safety amongst its Member States.
Caribbean heads have decided to ban the use of assault weapons in the civilian populations of their respective nations.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Dr Keith Rowley, made the announcement on Tuesday while delivering closing remarks at the Regional Symposium: Violence as a Public Health Issue – The Crime Challenge.
The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, has hailed the recently concluded CARICOM Regional Symposium on “Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue” a success, stating that he is confident the resolutions from that symposium will lead to a reduction in crime across the Caribbean region.

Fellow Caribbean Leaders, peoples of the Caribbean, from Mexico to Suriname, Welcome…welcome to this Symposium, this unique exchange of experiences and perspectives, among the people of the Caribbean.
This morning we, the many components of Caribbean leadership, stand here as a collective body speaking to, and with you, the whole of the Caribbean, above all in our geographical, social, racial, religious, economic and democratic complexities, and diversity.
As CARICOM Heads of Government begin a regional symposium to address crime and violence as a public health issue in Port of Spain, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, on Monday, 16 April, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett has said that timely implementation of solutions to address the underlying causes will require human and financial resources, data and research.
