Caribbean finance ministers among Commonwealth group meeting with international lending agencies

WASHINGTON, CMC - St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas is leading a high-level group of Commonwealth ministers that is ending a two-day visit to Washington on Tuesday after holding discussions with representatives of leading international financial institutions on the issue of debt and financing challenges for developing countries.
The delegation also includes Jamaica’s Finance Minister Dr. Peter Philips and his counterparts from Samoa, the Seychelles and Tonga.

Kenyan president says mall bloodbath over

NAIROBI (AFP) - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta announced Tuesday that a four-day siege by Islamist gunmen of a Nairobi shopping mall was over, with the "immense" loss of 61 civilians and six members of the security forces.
"We have ashamed and defeated our attackers, that part of our task is completed," a sombre Kenyatta, who himself lost family members in the assault, said in a televised address to the nation.
"Our losses are immense," he added, announcing three days of national mourning.

Paris-based media organisation calls on Governor General to veto bill

PARIS, CMC – The Paris-based media group, Reporters Without Borders (RWB) has written to Governor General Dame Cécile La Grenade urging her to veto the Electronic Crimes Act that critics say would punish the sending of “offensive” electronic communication with up to one year in prison.

Curacao party leader assassinated in drive-by shooting

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao - The leader of the largest political party in Curacao's coalition government was shot dead late Sunday in the Punda section of the Dutch island's capital, media reports here said.
Helmin Wiels of the Pueblo Soberano Party (Sovereign People Party) was reportedly shot in a drive-by shooting around 5 pm (2200 GMT).
With his death, the coalition government, with a one-seat hold on power here, has been plunged into crisis.

Dutch Foreign Ministry disapproves of Suriname’s choice for ambassador

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, CMC-Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans has expressed disapproval over Suriname’s choice of Errol Alibux for its ambassador to Turkey. “I regret that Suriname has again appointed one of the suspects in the December murder case as ambassador,” Timmermans said on Dutch TV on Wednesday. Liakat Errol Alibux, 65, a Netherlands trained sociologist who in previous Governments served as Foreign Minister, Finance Minister and Natural Resources Minister, was sworn in last week as Suriname’s first non-residing ambassador to Turkey.
