It is my pleasure to bring you greetings on behalf of the Secretary General and staff of the Caribbean Community and to address this important regional youth assembly.

First of all I would like to thank you for the honour that you have extended to me in my capacity as the Secretary General of the Caribbean Community to address you this evening. I would also like to thank you for the excellent hospitality which you have provided during my visit.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF HER EXCELLENCY MANORMA P. SOEKNANDAN, AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF SURINAME TO THE CO-OPERATIVE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA AND THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM)

Ambassador Soeknandan presented her Credentials to the Secretary-General of CARICOM , today, 24 January 2002, at the Georgetown-based Headquarters of the Secretariat.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Her Excellency Manorma P. Soeknandan, Ambassador of the Republic of Suriname to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Caribbean Community is a lawyer by profession.

GUYANA AND SURINAME WORK TOWARDS PEACEFUL BORDER SOLUTION

The Presidents of Guyana and Suriname have expressed their commitment to work towards a peaceful solution to the centuries old border dispute between the two countries.

Speaking at a joint press conference in The Bahamas, where the 22nd Meeting of Heads of Government and State of the Caribbean Community is being held, President Jagdeo of Guyana and President Runaldo Venetiaan of Suriname pledged to work towards a peaceful solution to the dispute.

CARICOM DELEGATION CONCLUDES OFFICIAL VISIT TO SURINAME

Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Rt. Hon. Owen Arthur, Prime Minister of Barbados, accompanied by Secretary-General of the CARICOM Secretariat, Mr. Edwin Carrington, and Assistant Secretary-General, Foreign and Community Relations, Mr. Albert Ramdin, earlier this week concluded three days of consultations with key stakeholders in the Republic of Suriname.

STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) SECRETARIAT ON THE PASSING OF HIS EXCELLENCY, HENK ARRON, FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF SURINAME

 It was with profound sadness that the Caribbean Community learnt of the recent passing of His Excellency, Henck Arron, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Suriname, on 4 December 2000 at the age of 64.

Recently decorated by the Government of Suriname for service to the country, Henck Arron played a key role in the political arena of his beloved country. He will best be remembered for negotiating a three and a half billion guilder 'golden handshake' as part of Suriname's independence package from Holland.

Madam Minister, It is an honour, which is deeply appreciated, to have been invited to respond on behalf of the diplomatic community to your kind expression of welcome to this luncheon in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Independence of Suriname.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL TO VISIT SURINAME

At the invitation of His Excellency Ronald Runaldo Venetiaan, President of the Republic of Suriname, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Mr. Edwin Carrington will participate in Suriname's 25th Anniversary celebrations on 25-26 November 2000.

Mr. Carrington has also been invited by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Maria Levens to make a presentation on the regional integration process during a working lunch with the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Suriname.
