Suriname to introduce pardon for illegal migrants

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Suriname is to introduce a general pardon for people living in the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country as well as provide a grace period for those residing here illegally to fix their papers.
The government had initially intended to grant the pardon to members of the Chinese community residing here illegally, but widened the initiative to include undocumented nationals from Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia and Guyana.

SURINAME-CRIME-President Desi Bouterse breaks silence on arrest of his son

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC - President Desi Bouterse Tuesday hinted that the arrest of his 41-year-old son in Panama last week may have been part of a wider plan to disrupt progress within the Union of American States (UNASUR).
Dino Bouterse  was held on drugs and gun related charges last Thursday at the request of US authorities, just as South American Heads of State were gathering in Paramaribo for their annual summit.

SURINAME-CONFERENCE -All set for South American summit

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC - With the start of the meeting of Foreign Affairs ministers from South America on Thursday here, all is set for the historical 7th Summit of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) on Friday. This will be the first meeting of UNASUR government leaders without the late president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, the driving force behind this integration movement who died in March this year.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to be here with all of you at the Closing Ceremony of the Eleventh Caribbean Festival of Arts and to deliver these brief remarks on behalf of the Secretary General of the Caribbean Community, H.E Mr. Irwin LaRocque.  This has been a very vibrant and exciting ten days of sharing and showcasing the many dimensions of our rich Caribbean culture, and that of our many visiting contingents of artists from UNASUR and other friends from outside our region.

Innovation is alive and well at CARIFESTA XI

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  Two of the most innovative aspects of CARIFESTA were declared open on Monday in Paramaribo, Suriname with the Caribbean Market Place for the Arts and the Youth Village.

SURINAME-CARIFESTA-Company hopes to push “Green Village” at CARIFESTA

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The 11th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Art (CARIFESTA XI) opens in Suriname on Friday with the host country promising that the region’s premier arts and cultural festival will turn the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country into a gigantic stage of entertainment. But for Orlando Olmberg, the supplier of solar equipment, Guguplex, he is using the occasion to set up an educational “Green village”, the size of a football field to showcase the possibilities of solar for providing rural communities with much needed energy for electricty.

100-strong T&T team for Suriname… Cabinet approves $3m for Carifesta 2013

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to send a contingent of 100 people to Suriname for the Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta) at a cost of $3 million. Deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism Vel Lewis confirmed that the details of this country’s participation had been finalised, and the contingent would participate in a number of activities at the event from August 16-26.
