SURINAME APPOINTS AMBASSADOR TO CARICOM

Mar 19, 1998

Suriname has become the latest Member State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to accredit an Ambassador to the Community.

His Excellency Dr. Humphrey Abdul Rafeek Hasrat presented his credentials to CARICOM Secretary General Mr. Edwin Carrington at CARICOM Headquarters, Georgetown, Guyana on Tuesday. Suriname joins Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, St Kitts/Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago as Member States of the Community with diplomatic accreditation to CARICOM. India, Mexico and Venezuela are non-Member States with diplomatic representation to the Community.

Dr Hasrat, who is also Suriname's Ambassador to Guyana, told the Secretary-General that his appointment as Ambassador "is a symbol of the seriousness with which we view CARICOM. For the Government and People of Suriname, our future is in CARICOM."

Mr Carrington said the Ambassador's appointment was a positive signal from Suriname and he was delighted to welcome someone of "such competence, experience and ability." He mentioned Dr Hasrat's long and distinguished service to his country both in his medical profession and as a diplomat.

Dr Hasrat, 51, a specialist in military medicine, has served in both the military, where he rose to Medical Commander of the Army and public services.
