The Global Biodiversity Framework embodies our shared vision to halt biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems, setting a master plan to “LIVE IN PEACE WITH NATURE.” This plan recognises the essential role of local communities, indigenous peoples, and the need for access to financing and adequate benefit-sharing mechanisms. 

In 2016, Belize faced a $20 million annual shortfall in biodiversity management. With today’s more ambitious goals, resource needs are even greater. Yet, accessing cooperation and finance remains challenging, hindering fast-tracked implementation of national biodiversity strategies. Belize urges the global community to mobilise technical and financial support to invest in PEACE WITH NATURE. 

Progress tracking requires measurable indicators, but such systems are not yet fully instituted across Member countries. Belize stresses the importance of robust biodiversity information systems for accountability and transparency. 

Belize has shown commitment by advancing toward national and global biodiversity targets. Our marine conservation efforts are nearing 25% protection, with the goal of 30% by 2030. Through grants, we’ve invested over USD 7 million in coastal and marine biodiversity. Our National Landscape Restoration Strategy prioritises the restoration of ecosystems, such as mangroves and riparian forests. We’ve also established a dedicated National Biodiversity Office to strengthen governance, financing, and community participation. 

Chair, Belize reaffirms its commitment to the Biodiversity Plan and calls upon all to act now. The time is now to meet the 30x30 goal, prioritize financial flows, ensure transparency, and support fair benefit-sharing mechanisms.
