STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR LOLITA APPLEWHAITE, DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) AT THE OPENING OF THE 2ND CHINA-CARICOM ECONOMIC AND TRADE COOPERATION FORUM, 7 SEPTEMBER 2007, XIAMEN, CHINA

It is an honour for me to represent the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at this the 2nd China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum, following the very successful 1st forum which took place in Jamaica in February 2005. Regrettably, he was unable to be present at this Forum since he will be attending a meeting of our Heads of Government who will shortly be meeting in Trinidad and Tobago at a Special Summit to discuss health issues.

CDB VICE PRESIDENT URGES COLLABORATION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In the face of unfulfilled expectations in the range and quality of statistical data in the Caribbean Region, policy-makers and researchers need to create a symbiotic relationship that would ultimately produce good socio-economic planning, Mr. Neville Grainger, Vice President Finance, Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) said.

INTER-AGENCY COLLABORATION FOR CARICOM YOUTH COMMISSION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Four international development agencies have started collaboration with the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development in data collection on youth related issues.

This is in support of the Commission’s mandate to assess the challenges and opportunities for youth in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and recommend a strategy to the Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government in July, 2008 on how to improve empower youth and their quality of life.

FINANCING AGREEMENT SIGNED TO SUPPORT CCJ OPERATIONS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and CARIFORUM, H.E. Edwin Carrington on Friday 17 August signed a 1.3M Euro Financing Agreement to support the operations of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). The signing ceremony took place at the CCJ Training and Conference Room, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

REMARKS BY H.E. EDWIN CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF CARIFORUM, AT THE SIGNING CEREMONY FOR THE FINANCING AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND CARIFORUM, FOR THE INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT TO THE CARIBBEAN COURT OF JUSTICE, 17 AUGUST 2007, PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) was established by the Agreement establishing the CCJ which entered into force on 23rd July 2002.

The Agreement establishing the CCJ has been signed by all 12 member States that have declared their intention to be participants in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Heads of Governments of CARICOM have recognized the important function of dispute settlement procedures in a more integrated Community and an effective Single Market and Economy.
