More than 50% of electricity demand to be supplied by Renewables

The Government is projecting that within two years, more than half of Jamaica’s electricity demand, totalling nearly 700 megawatts will be generated from renewable  sources.

According to Finance and Public Service Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, this is based on the Government’s “aggressive” approach to fuel diversification resulting in over 200 megawatts  of renewable energy already being supplied to the national power grid.

Finland signals interest in CARICOM’s bioenergy

The Government of Finland, through its newly accredited envoy to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), has expressed strong interest in exploring the bioenergy potential in mainland territories of CARICOM.

Barbados to establish regional energy centre

Barbados is to establish a Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Energy Minister Darcy Boyce has said.

Boyce, who held talks with Paolo Serpi, Italy’s Special Envoy to the Caribbean, said that the centre, which is expected to be inaugurated at the end of October, would ensure that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries all had the same standards in respect of renewable energy and energy efficiency as well as similar technologies and the necessary legislation in place.

European Union diplomat urges Caribbean to rethink renewable energy polices

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Oct 1, CMC – The head of the European Union Delegation to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Ambassador Mikael Barfod says if the Caribbean is to fully integrate renewable energy into its development path so that it impacts on its economy, then it must adjust its mind-set to do so.

Barfod, who will be participating in the October 6-8 Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum in Miami, said currently, access to renewable energy in the region is much skewed.

US Vice President announces launch of Caribbean Energy Security Initiative
