CARIFORUM and European Commission Advance Regional Integration Elements of EPA Negotiations

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – Senior Caribbean and European Commission (EC) officials met in Barbados today, November 12.  The encounter marked the Second Meeting of CARIFORUM-EC Principal Negotiators; the first having been convened in Brussels, July 15, 2004.

CARIFORUM officials were led by Ambassador Dr. Richard Bernal, Director General of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM) and Caribbean Principal Negotiator on Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), and the EC team was headed by Mr. Karl Falkenberg, Director DG-Trade.

The Tenth Special Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community was held in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on 8-9 November 2004. The meeting was chaired by Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, and Chairman of the Conference.

DELIVERING THE CSME BY 2005: THE PORT-OF-SPAIN STATEMENT ON THE CARICOM SINGLE MARKET AND ECONOMY

Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) met in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, for the Tenth Special Meeting 8-9 November 2004, pursuant to the decision of the Conference at its Twenty-Fifth Regular Meeting at Grand Anse, Grenada in July 2004 to convene a Special Meeting to discuss progress towards the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), including realising the Single Market targets by 2005.

CARICOM REGION BETTER POSITIONED TO UNDERTAKE DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has secured the sum of US$81 million in USAID Assistance to undertake its regional development priorities in Trade Competitiveness, HIV/AIDS and the reconstruction of Grenada.

The funds, which make up part of a five-year programme, mark another important stage in what is described as a "strong, substantial and strategic relationship between USAID and the CARICOM Region."
