Toast Proposed by Amb. Lolita Applewhaite, Deputy Secretary-General, CARICOM on the Occasion of the Celebration of CARICOM-Cuba Day, 8 December, 2004

Today we celebrate CARICOM-Cuba Day as mandated by Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the Caribbean Community and Cuba on 8 December 2002. That decision was taken on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment in 1972 of diplomatic relations between the then four independent states of the Region and the Government of Cuba.

CARICOM and Cuba to Celebrate Thirty-Two Years of Relations

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Secretary General, Edwin Carrington will lead a five member delegation to Cuba on Tuesday 7 December, to participate in activities to mark CARICOM/Cuba Day.

The special observance, which was inaugurated in 2002 at the time of the signing of the Havana Declaration, will be commemorated on Wednesday, 8 December with a series of activities in Member States of CARICOM and in Cuba.

This Ceremony for the Signing of two Agreements between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Federal Republic of Germany presents a timely opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany to a number of developmental initiatives in the Region, including, but not restricted to, the building of regional capacity through the replenishment of the Study and Expert Fund and the provision of timely and well tailored assistance to stem the tide of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

SECURITY COOPERATION TO UNDERLINE CARICOM-CANADA RELATIONS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown) Relations between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Canada will be bolstered in the areas of crime and security cooperation, transportation and social development, with these areas identified for further discussion and priority attention by Canada's High Commissioner and Plenipotentiary Representative to CARICOM, His Excellency Bruno Picard.
