CARICOM SINGLE MARKET OFFERS OPPORTUNITY FOR STRONGER REGION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Hon. Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago said that with the implementation of the Single Market and later, the Single Economy, the Community was now set to fully develop its potential and build on its strengths.

Patterson delivered a moving farewell speech this week, at the conclusion of the 18th meeting of the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on External Negotiations, which he has chaired for the past thirteen years. Prime Minister Patterson retires from active politics after over thirty years of service to the Caribbean Community. “It has been for me a great honour and privilege to chair this committee since it was first conceived in the Bahamas in 1993.

CARICOM CHAIRMAN DISSATISFIED WITH SPEED OF REGIONAL ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION

Colleagues,

Like all previous meetings of CARICOM Stakeholders on Sugar, our Third Meeting comes at another critical juncture in the ongoing Sugar Reform process, that is, on the eve of an important meeting of the EU Agricultural Council scheduled to be held on 20-21 February 2006.

That meeting is likely to deliberate on the level of financial support that will be extended to ACP sugar supplying States for their Action Plans on Accompanying Measures.

CARICOM observers for Haiti Elections

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A six member team from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will travel to Haiti on Saturday 4th February, to observe the first round of next Tuesday’s presidential and legislative elections.

The team will be headed by Jamaica’s former Director of Elections, Mr. Noel Lee, and will include observers from other Member States.
