COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE EIGHTEENTH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (COHSOD) – EDUCATION AND HEALTH, 3-4 JUNE 2009, MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  The Eighteenth Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) which focussed on Education and Health was convened under the theme: “Winds of change: Education and Health collaborating to advance Human and Social Development” was held at the Ritz Carlton, Golf and Spa, Montego Bay, Jamaica, 3-4 June 2009.

SYMPOSIUM TO MAP FUTURE IN SERVICES IN A MORE STRUCTURED WAY - PM SPENCER

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Services Sector is to be shaped into a more structured one to derive maximum benefit and boost its already prominent position in the Region’s economy. To this end, a Regional Symposium on Services, proposed by the Hon. Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, and Lead Head of Government with responsibility for Services, will be held in Antigua and Barbuda 15-17 July.

CARIFESTA A MUST IN SPITE OF GLOBAL CRISIS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Region’s premier cultural feast - CARIFESTA - was the subject of vigorous debate at the 20th Meeting of the Regional Cultural Committee (RCC) in Suriname on Wednesday as it grappled with the challenge of staging the Festival in the face of the global financial crisis.

CARICOM’s 2009 10k Road Race Launched

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Fifth Staging of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) 10K Road Race was launched in Georgetown, Guyana on Friday, June 5, 2009.

As the Region intensifies its efforts to tackle Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), under the Port of Spain Declaration on Uniting in the fight against NCDs, this event, scheduled for June 28, 2009, will be used as a platform to promote activities which could bolster health and wellness among CARICOM nationals.

Last July, when CARICOM Heads of Government met here in Antigua and Barbuda, they endorsed my proposal to convene a Regional Symposium on Services to develop a Regional Policy and Strategy for the further development of the Services Sector.
