CARIBBEAN-CRIME-Operation Caribbean Resilience makes significant in criminal activities

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, CMC - The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency says Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents and partners have made 116 criminal arrests, and seized 60 illegal firearms and 2,757 rounds of ammunition during the month of July as a part of Operation Caribbean Resilience.

ICE said the Caribbean initiative has also resulted in 676 arrests and the seizure of 630 illegal firearms and 33,885 rounds of ammunition since its inception in January 2012.

Addressing a China-Latin American Forum here on Tuesday, Sir Ronald argued that "while efforts at integration of Latin America and the Caribbean have started, they are at a very early stage of overcoming historical obstacles and impediments, and the smaller Caribbean economies continue to require special attention.

Earthquakes Hit Area of Northwestern China

HONG KONG — A series of earthquakes in Gansu Province in northwestern China set off landslides and building collapses in an impoverished mountainous region Monday, killing at least 56 people and injuring more than 400, according to figures from the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau that were being revised upward by the hour. The seismological bureau estimated the magnitude of the main earthquake at 6.6. The United States Geological Survey listed three fairly strong earthquakes in Gansu Province on Monday morning, with magnitudes of 5.9, 5.6 and 4.7.

China, Latin America, Caribbean forum opens

The second China-Latin America and the Caribbean Think Tank Forum opened Monday in Beijing.
China will work with Latin America and the Caribbean to implement agreements reached by the leaders of China and Latin American countries and enhance ties, State Councilor Yang Jiechi said at the forum's opening ceremony.
China attaches great importance to developing its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, Yang noted.

Costa Rica seized over 4 tons of cocaine in Caribbean Sea

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, CMC – Costa Rica’s Minister of Public Safety, Francisco Zamora, says law enforcement officials have seized 4.6 tons of cocaine and 1.47 tons of marijuana in the Caribbean Sea so far this year. Zamora told reporters here that between January and July, the Coast Guard intercepted 11 boats in the “Caribbean zone” and arrested 12 suspects “for offenses related to drug trafficking. He said all suspects are in currently in custody awaiting trial.

Quoting Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, the Caribbean outlet reports on the leader’s position, just three days after Dominican Republic president Danilo Medina attended a meeting of CARICOM nations to mark its 40th anniversary, held in Trinidad & Tobago.

Tropical Storm Chantal nears Dominican Republic, Haiti, creating flooding fears

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Tropical Storm Chantal roared south of Puerto Rico early Wednesday on a path that will see it pass over the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where authorities warned of possible landslides and heavy flooding.
Chantal was becoming disorganized and a hurricane watch was discontinued for the Dominican Republic's southern coast, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. However, a tropical storm warning was in effect for the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, and the southeastern Bahamas.
