ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The recent events in Egypt have reminded the world that democracy entails more than a capacity to vote. What a relief it had been when the military dictatorship of President Mubarak had been superseded by an election in which the Egyptian people did in fact get the opportunity to cast their votes in a free and fair election and vote for a new government.
However, after one year, a huge section of the country, which seemed to have expected miracles from the Muslim Brotherhood Government or were praying for its failure, seems to have become disillusioned and mounted a countrywide opposition to the government in power.
Eventually, the army seems to have supported the countrywide call by opposition elements for the government to resign. Within 48 hours, the army had seized power and arrested the main figures in the government.
