Most Remarkable Teen Awardees challenged to encourage development of at-risk youth

Twenty-five outstanding teens in the St. Kitts and Nevis were encouraged to identify and work along with at-risk youth to assist them in overcoming challenges. The challenge was thrown out by Michael Perkins, Senator and Acting Speaker of the Federal Parliament at the 25 Most Remarkable Teens (MRT) Awards at a special sitting of Parliament on Thursday, November 12. The Senator also used the opportunity to commend the teens on their achievement.

One thing I would add is that you not only keep it to yourself, but to identify other youth who are at risk, someone you know who you feel is going down the wrong path. Identify one or two, try to bring them under your guidance and make them a better person.

He stated that the teens had done well and that they were recognised at the highest level in the National Assembly.

Geoffrey Hanley, Director of Youth Empowerment, reflected on the work done by the teens, and stressed his delight at participating in such a prestigious event. He encouraged them to continue excelling.

These remarkable teens, Mr. Speaker, are exceptional in their various areas and we commend them all,” said Mr. Hanley, while urging the teens to continue to let their light shine wherever they went, as they were now placed in the spotlight.

The award you would have received is your passport to aspire to greatness, be the best in whatever you do.

The Director of Youth reminded the teens that they were expected to develop a community project that would impact the lives of youth, the elderly and the various communities. He urged them to spend quality time to define their projects, in order to execute them well.

Mr. Hanley extended sincere thanks and appreciation to the Hon. Shawn Richards, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth Empowerment, for his support in the Youth Department initiative and the Government by extension. Special mention was also made of the staff of the department for their support over the years, as well as Christopher Herbert, Permanent Secretary, for his assistance in making sure that the funds were made available to host the event.

The 25 MRT, a youth recognition initiative in St. Kitts and Nevis, was founded in November 2011 and is the only one of its kind in the Region. To date, 125 teens have been awarded under this programme.
