In Montserrat, CDB Paves the Way for Better Access to Basic Services

For many years, the residents of Barzey’s Village in Montserrat had just a small gravel road connecting them to schools, public transportation and jobs.

Soil erosion and heavy rainfall made road conditions worse. As a result, residents didn’t have regular garbage pickups and when there was an emergency, it was hard for health and fire services to get into their neighbourhood.

Montserrat sends Defence Force contingent to Dominica

With the passage of Tropical Storm Erika and coming right after the conclusion of the Royal Montserrat Defence Force annual camp the Government of Montserrat with the UK Department for International Development support has decided to deploy a contingent from the Force to Dominica. The contingent will carry out disaster relief work and support CDEMA in their work on that island.

Caribbean Public Health Agency aims to reduce child obesity by 2025

San Juan, (EFE).- The Caribbean Public Health Agency, or CARPHA, published a Plan of Action for Promoting Healthy Weights: 2014 - 2019, part of a push to reduce obesity among children and adolescents by 2025.

CARPHA has an integrated strategy to address nutrition-related diseases in Caribbean countries, where the proportion of overweight or obese people is in the range of 28 percent to 35 percent.

S&P maintains BBB- rating for Montserrat

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC – The United States-based rating agency, Standard & Poor's (S&P), has affirmed its 'BBB-/A-3' sovereign issuer credit ratings on Montserrat addi8ng that the outlook remains stable.
“Our 'BBB-' transfer and convertibility assessment is unchanged. The ratings on Montserrat reflect the United Kingdom’s institutional and budgetary support of the island, which is an internally self-governing overseas territory of the U.K.

MONTSERRAT-FILM-Montserrat says it is open for Hollywood movies

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC – Award winning director Benh Zeitlin will hold talks with officials of the Montserrat Development Corporation (MDC) on the possibility of filming on the volcano ravaged British Overseas Territory.
Zeitlin will be on the island for the screening of his Oscar-nominated film “Beast of the Southern Wild” on Saturday.

MONTSERRAT-ENERGY-Encouraging signs in geothermal energy project

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC – Montserrat officials say they are encouraged by the geothermal flow at the first well that became active last month. Britain’s Department for International Development (DFID) is funding the exploratory phase of the geothermal energy project and Premier Reuben Meade says he is hoping London will fund the entire project so that the resources and revenue can go to the people of Montserrat rather than to private firms.

Montserrat to host workshop to save endangered Mountain Chicken

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC– Local, regional and international stakeholders will convene on Montserrat on Tuesday for a four-day workshop to work on a strategy to save the critically endangered Mountain Chicken.
The Mountain Chicken recovery programme workshop to be held at the Montserrat National Trust in Olveston, will review activities of the Mountain Chicken project and highlight the current issues of concern that exist both in Montserrat and Dominica.

Montserrat to benefit from 11th EDF programme

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC – Montserrat says it will receive funding for development programmes under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) during the period 2014-2020. The European Union Foreign Affairs Council Monday approved the level of funding for the 11th EDF for the period 2014-2020 of which Euro 364 million pounds (One Euro = US$.1.25) is for the Overseas Countries and Territories.

Montserrat seeks EOIs for submarine fibre optic cable project

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC – The Montserrat government Wednesday said it was soliciting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for its proposed submarine fibre optic cable project. Director of the Department for Information Technology and eGovernment Services (DITES), Denzil West, said the government is considering five different project business models for the development and implementation of the project, and “intends to identify and facilitate the model that will be most effective in bringing the greatest benefits to Montserratians”.
