Rescue mission

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Guardian - FINANCE and Economic Affairs Minister, Christopher Sinckler yesterday announced a 19-month rescue mission for the Barbados economy that he said would see a lower fiscal deficit and improved activity. In what amounted to some very tough actions to deal with a ballooning deficit and a declining economy, the Minister used his fourth Budget to announce a shift in financing the education of Barbadians at the University of the West Indies, come September next year. They will have to pay tuition fees while Government continues to pay their economic costs.

Move to eliminate or merge specific government entities

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Guardian - Eighteen government entities are in line for a merger or elimination was the implication made by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Christopher Sinckler as he outlined the 2013 budgetary proposals. The Minister of Finance pulled together a team of senior officials in the ministry to conduct a preliminary assessment of a list of statutory entities currently funded by government and to make recommendations for their reorganisation.

JAMAICA-COURT-Government to amend Evidence Act to allow for computer generated evidence

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government is moving to amend the Evidence Act to facilitate easy admission of computer generated evidence in cases, Justice Minister Mark Golding has said. “Our provisions in the Evidence Act are antiquated and require quite a convoluted series of steps in terms of proof of the working of the machine, before any computer-generated evidence can be admitted,” Golding said, adding that given the prevalence of computers, the government wants to modernise the provisions and make them more user friendly.

HAITI-POLITICS-Taiwan President arrives in Haiti at start of Caribbean tour

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – President Ma Ying jeou arrived in Haiti Tuesday at the start of a visit to several Caribbean countries. BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados faced with a decline in revenue Tuesday announced new measures to revive an ailing economy with Finance Minister Chris Sinckler announcing new tax measures while acknowledging that the government's macro–economic programme is off track and must be brought in line. Sinckler, delivering his first national budget since the Freundel Stuart administration won the last general election in February, told Parliament that he is optimistic the fiscal measures will bear fruit.

Intervene on what grounds

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is questioning on what grounds the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) or even the Commonwealth can intervene in the political situation in St. Kitts-Nevis. Opposition legislators have accused regional governments of remaining silent on the political stalemate in the twin-island Federation occasioned by the refusal to date of the Parliament to debate a motion of no confidence filed against the government of Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas.

ST. LUCIA-BUSINESS-Manufacturers give shopping list to St. Lucia government

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – President of the St. Lucia Manufacturers Association (SLMA), Paula Calderon, is calling on the government to give more attention to the manufacturing sector which has been making a consistent contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In a television interview, Calderon expressed the opinion that greater attention is being paid to tourism, the mainstay of the economy, which she says “has received everything they’ve ask for”.

GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC - Chief Justice Anthony Smellie has ruled that Education and Employment Minister Tara Rivers can keep her West Bay seat in the Parliament after the husband of an election rival had filed a petition challenging her nomination. “The Hon. Chief Justice’s ruling reaffirms that I was duly and rightfully elected and now we can all move forward as a country. It’s time to talk about meaningful employment and liveable wages, an education system that works and gender equality for all our people.
