Opposition chided on boycott

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - AS NINE EMPTY benches faced Government yesterday in the House of Assembly during presentation of a $15.7 million supplementary resolution to subsidize diesel, the Opposition boycott came in for a tongue-lashing from a senior minister.
Minister of Small Business Denis Kellman noted that yesterday was Government’s fifth “birthday” – the anniversary of the January 13, 2008 election victory – and it should be celebrated instead of being seen as a time to “cock up and die”.

GULP to contest February polls

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Grenada’s oldest political party Tuesday signalled its intention to contest the February 19 general elections despite having not won a seat since 1999.
Former opposition leader Michael Baptiste will lead the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) that once dominated politics here under the leadership of then prime minister Eric Gairy, who was removed from office in the first ever coup in the English speaking Caribbean in 1979.

BLP boycotts Parliament, calls for election date to be announced

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Tuesday defended its decision to boycott a sitting of Parliament accusing the ruling Democratic Party (DLP) of failing to follow tradition and announcing the date for a general election in Barbados.

Two new one-term govts?

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - TWO countries of the Caribbean Community—Barbados and Grenada—are expected to be involved in parliamentary elections next month.
Barbados is yet to announce its election date—Grenada's will be on February 19.
But speculations are in full swing about the likelihood of one-term governments in both Bridgetown and St George's under two first-time prime ministers.

CARICOM leaders to meet in Haiti next month

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders will meet in Haiti next month, the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat announced Tuesday.
It said that the arrangements for the February 18-19 meeting had been finalised at the 31st meeting of the CARICOM Council of Ministers meeting here on Monday.

IRENA GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING

The Third General Assembly Meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was held on 13-14 January 2013 in Abu Dhabi, and the CARICOM Secretariat represented by its Programme Manager, Energy, participated as an Observer. Four CARICOM Member States were also represented, viz, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana, and St. Vincent and Grenadines.
