Barbados to establish oil spill contingency fund

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados Tuesday announced plans to establish a national oil spill contingency fund.
Addressing the start of a two-day regional workshop on the International Liability Compensatory Regimes for Pollution Damage, acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment and Drainage, Edison Alleyne, said that the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Information and Training Centre for the Wider Caribbean (REMPEITC-Caribe) has offered to assist Barbados the Barbados National Oil Spill Response Committee in the establishment of the fund.

Opposition party wants ban on gambling

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The small opposition Lucian Peoples Movement (LPM) is calling on the government to ban gaming facilities and slot machines which it claims are having a destabilising effect on the lives of St. Lucians.
The LPM has accused both the ruling St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) and the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) of hypocrisy in dealing with the situation.

Government warns of illegal information about Citizens Investment Programme

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Antigua and Barbuda government has warned it would move against people setting up illegal websites to promote the island’s Citizenship Investment Programme (CIP).
Attorney General Justin Simon told Parliament that the Baldwin Spencer administration is in the process of building its own website to promote the CIP that the government hopes will, within three years attract 1,800 new citizens or 450 families and generate US$550 million by offering citizenship in return for investment or a direct financial contribution.

Dominica hosts major conference on geothermal energy development

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says a two-day geothermal conference will provide Dominica with an opportunity to secure funding for its geothermal energy development.
“It will be an opportunity to share with potential partners and current partners about the prospects we have and what will be needed to see the implementation of the geothermal project. It is important that we share this information with our partners,” Skerrit said of the two-day conference that begins on Thursday.

NY Crime Buster Heads To T&T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Former New York police commissioner William “Bill” Joseph Bratton is expected to arrive in T&T in November to conduct a “diagnostic test” of the Police Service to determine the root cause of its problems and find a way forward for a more efficient organisation and ultimately a safer country. Emphasis would also be placed on immediately rooting out rogue officers rather than having them remain in the service, sometimes for years, on suspension with full pay before their matters are tried and completed.

LIAT accepts resignation of CEO

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The regional airline, LIAT, Wednesday said it had accepted the resignation of its chief executive officer, Ian Brunton, more than a week after it promised a “formal announcement” on the issue.
But the brief statement gave no reasons for Brunton’s resignation, saying that Mrs Julie Reifer-Jones has been appointed to act in the position.
“The Board of Directors thanks Mr. Brunton for his service and wishes him every success in his future endeavours,” the statement added.

Haiti steps up fight against against illegal drugs trade

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Haitian law enforcement authorities say they have seized more than 2,000 kilogrammes of illegal drugs over the past 20 months and confiscated more than a million US dollars.
Head of the Anti-Drug Unit, Joris Mergelus, said in addition 238 people have been detained in connection with the seizure and illegal rug shipments.
“Of the 238 arrested as of August this year, 31 are woman and 18 have been extradited to the US, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic," he said.

More murders force police to review strategy

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica police say they will adopt new strategies to deal with the upsurge in criminal activities after official figures show that more people were killed here during the first nine months of the year as compared to 2012.
Figures released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) show that 856 murders were recorded during the period January to September, a five per cent increase when compared to the 817 reported for the corresponding period last year.

Haitian American architect wins design for permanent memorial honouring victims of slave trade

UNITED NATIONS, CMC - A Haitian American architect has been declared the winner of an international competition to design a memorial that will be permanently on display at United Nations Headquarters in New York to honor victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.
Unveiling Rodney Leon’s “Ark of Return” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the memorial would “ serve as a reminder of the bravery of those slaves, abolitionists and unsung heroes who managed to rise up against an oppressive system, fight for their freedom and end the practice”.
