BRDIGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - To be competitive Barbadians need to embrace ICTs, as theycan significantly drive development in Barbados.

This was the suggestion made by Donville Inniss, Minister of Industry, International Business Commerce and Small Business Development yesterday at the Digicel Corporate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Conference at the Hilton.

TRINIDAD-POLITICS-Prime Minister to pay official visit to Canada

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC- Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar is to pay an official visit to Canada later this month, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

It said the April 23-26 visit is in response to an invitation from the Prime Minister Stephen Harper and follows the State visit of Canada’s Governor General David Johnston and his wife to Trinidad and Tobago during the 50thanniversary of independence 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

TRINIDAD-BIRTHDAY-Identical twins celebrate 100th birthday

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - Identical twin sisters, Louise Pierre and Louisa Danzel, from the fishing village of Blanchisseuse celebrated their 100th birthday on Wednesday. The twins also celebrated the birthday of their neighbour Richard Morgan, who will turn 101 on May 25.

All three were honoured by Member of Parliament for Arima, Rodger Samuel, and Minister of State in the Ministry of the People and Social Development and Department of Ageing, Vernella Toppin, in a ceremony which was attended by various Ministry officials, friends and family of the centenarians.

JAMAICA-POLITICS-Government denies Cabinet re-shuffle

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government has denied a newspaper report of a Cabinet re-shuffle.

In a brief one paragraph statement, the Portia Simpson Miller government dismissed as “false” the report by the Gleaner newspaper on its website.

“The Prime Minister and her team remain focused on the national growth and the development agenda and will not be distracted by such reports,” the government statement said.

HAITI-POLITICS-Second Minister resigns

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Communications Minister Regine Godefroy became the second woman in as many days to quit the Haitian government.

While there has been no official communication as to the reasons why Godefroy joined former finance minister Marie Carmelle Jean-Marie in leaving the cabinet of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, media reports spoke of allegations of various types of government corruption.

The Office of the Prime Minister has already warned that it would not tolerate corruption.

GUYANA-POLITICS-Iran seeking to deepen relations with Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Iran is offering to help Guyana develop its agricultural, mining and industrial sectors.

Newly accredited Ambassador to Guyana Hojattolah Soltani has extended an invitation for a Guyana delegation comprising agricultural and industrial stakeholders to explore opportunities in his country as it seeks to deepen relations between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
Soltani, who presented his letters of Credence to President Donald Ramotar, said Iran has profound expertise making reference to mining, agriculture and industry.

BAHAMAS-TAX-Government providing tax amnesty to property owners

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government is providing a tax amnesty to property owners ahead of the June 30 deadline.

The government says effective immediately, the Real Property Tax Amnesty Programme could save home owners up to 50 per cent of the taxes owned to government if they make arrangements with the assessment team. But the government gave no indication as to how much money is owed to it by tax payers.
