BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC - Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas started an official visit to Kuwait holding talks with that country’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak AL-Hamad Al-Sabah as the two countries seek to increase bi-lateral relations and boost cooperation in several areas.
A government statement Wednesday said that the two leaders also discussed co operation in the economic, commercial and investment fields.

JAMAICA-HOUSING-Government to write off mortgages for 50 home owners

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government says it will write off the outstanding mortgage balances for 50 homeowners as part of the country’s 50th anniversary of political independence.
The programme being carried out by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing’s Jubilee Housing initiative will also result in these homeowners acquiring the necessary titles.
Minister responsibility for Housing, Dr. Morais Guy told Parliament that suitable beneficiaries have now been identified and plans for the ceremony are now being arranged.

GUYANA-POLITICS-President writes opposition legislators on anti-money laundering bill

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – President Donald Ramotar has written to members of the National Assembly urging them to ensure that the amendments to the anti-money laundering legislation is approved ahead of the international deadline.
In his letter, read out by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, the head of state called on all legislators to put aside their differences and put the country first.

HAITI-AID-World Bank approves new grants for maternal health, business development in Haiti

WASHINGTON, May 22, CMC - The World Bank has approved two new grants for maternal and child basic health services, and business development and investment in Haiti.
The Washington-based financial institution said about 1.8 million women and children in the earthquake-ravaged, French-speaking Caribbean country will benefit from one grant from the International Development Association (IDA), approved by the Board of Directors of the World Bank.

HAITI-DEVELOPMENT-Brazil assures Haiti of long term commitment to national development

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe has been assured of Brazil’s long-term commitment to the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country as he continues his official visit to the South American country.
A statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, noted that Lamothe held talks that focused on strengthening ties with Brazil and encouraging private sector investments in Haiti's developing economy.

DOMINICA-LIBERATION-Dominicans urged to embrace African heritage

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has called on Dominicans to embrace their African heritage.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the 50th anniversary of African Liberation Day, Skerrit said he also wanted the celebrations to be part of the National calendar.
“And I want to say that from henceforth this government shall continue to recognize and to play its part in the celebration of African Liberation Day as part of our national calendar of events in Dominica.”

DOMINICA-POLITICS-PM denies reports he is taking up job at United Nations

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has dismissed reports that he intends stepping down from office to take up a position at the United Nations.
“One of the rumours that they have been spreading is that I intend to resign and go take up a job at the UN,” Skerrit said on a radio programme here on Tuesday night.
“The public service, just to make it clear to everybody, just approved for the retirement age to be increased to 65 and I have no intention of retiring or taking early retirement, I’m only 40,” he said.

DOMINICA-ENERGY-Government looking to expand geothermal project

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government is exploring the possibility of expanding the geothermal project to other parts of the island, a senior public service official has said.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Ports, Lucien Blackmore, speaking at a function organised by the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC), said the Roosevelt Skerrit government is exploring the possibility of developing the geothermal potential in the southern and northern sections of the island.
