IDB grants aid to strengthen institutional capacity in the Bahamas

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$450,000 technical cooperation grant for strengthening institutional capacity in the Bahamas. The Washington-based financial institution said the grant was made at the request of the Government of The Bahamas. It said the general objective of the technical co-operation is to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) within the Government of The Bahamas “through enhancing its long-term development planning and investment project assessment functions.”

IDB to hold seminar on development challenges in the Caribbean

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says leading experts from academia and development institutions will gather here this week to address development challenges facing the Caribbean and Latin America.
The Washington-based financial institution said while the region faces “complex development challenges,” including crime, low growth rates and lagging educational achievement, scholars and policymakers will examine recent “policy-relevant findings that can assist the region in reaching its vast potential.”

OECS to benefit from US$20 million IDB loan

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has signed an agreement for US$20 million for a Global Loan Program with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for projects in four Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) countries. The CDB will lend the funds for the financing of public sector projects in Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. “These small open economies are vulnerable to external economic shocks and natural disasters,” said the IDB. “They are also still reeling from the effects of the recent financial crisis.”

IDB makes call for proposals on social inclusion and poverty reduction

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has launched another call for proposals from civil society organizations that carry out activities focused on poverty reduction and social inclusion and development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The call, made by the IDB’s Executive Director for the Government of Japan, Yasuhiro Atsumi, is for projects that support development through sustainable solutions in education, social protection, gender and rural community development in vulnerable communities in the 26 borrowing countries of the region.

Crime taking on toll on Caribbean economies

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says several commissioned studies have revealed that crime and violence have had a dramatic impact on women, youth and the economic well-being of families in Latin America and the Caribbean. The new studies “underscore the more hidden dimensions of the cost of crime” on regional economies, by looking at issues such as women’s health and property values” said a statement issued by the organisation.

Government Procurement Takes Center Stage

CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – A joint WTO/IDB-INTAL 'Regional Workshop on Government Procurement for Caribbean Countries' was held in Trinidad and Tobago, October 18 to 20. The workshop was opened by Hon. Conrad Enhill, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. Mr. William Robinson, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Representative in Trinidad & Tobago and Mr. Kodjo Osei-Lah of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat also addressed the opening ceremony.
