Inspiring change

Mar 07, 2014

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - TOMORROW is International Women’s Day 2014 and several states around the world will be celebrating the achievements of women on the social, political and economic fronts in particular, while still shining a spotlight on areas for further improvement as we move towards the goal of attaining equality for women. Each year, the United Nations designates the theme for International Women’s Day, and this year the theme is “Inspiring Change”. When one thinks of those who inspire change towards women’s equality, several role models come to mind. However, this year a few very special women were recognised for their good work, on the local and international scenes. Here in Barbados, the Honourable Maizie Barker-Welch was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to national, regional and international advocation for the rights of women, in Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s Honours list. Dame Maizie is a perfect example of one who inspires change. She served as Parliamentary Secretary in several ministries, including that of Women’s Affairs and held leadership roles, serving as the second President of the National Organisation of Women which was started in 1970. Dame Maizie is also a former President of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Barbados and was President of the Inter-American Commission of Women.
