World Environment Day - Solution to Plastic Pollution

World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment, celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, after it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Similarly, The Caribbean Community was also established in 1972 celebrating 50 years of integration, cooperation and development. In this pursuit, sustainable management of the environment and natural resources has always been a priority enshrined in the Treaty of Chaguaramas.

Keynote Address by CARICOM Secretary-General at 'CARICOM at Fifty' Symposium

CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, delivered the keynote address Friday morning (14 April 2023) at the opening ceremony of a symposium to mark the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean Community being observed this year.

The virtual symposium, titled ‘CARICOM at the Crossroads: Rising to the Challenge of a New Era’, was organised by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Institute of International Relations of The University of the West Indies (UWI).

CARICOM Secretariat’s energy use under state-of-the-art energy management system

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) - Energy at the CARICOM Secretariat is now managed through a state-of-the-art Building Energy Management System (BEMS).

This information technology allows the tracking of energy supplied and used by the national grid and from the Solar Photovoltaic Power Generation Plant, which was constructed on the grounds of the CARICOM Secretariat.

Justice Minister reinforces Jamaica’s commitment to human rights protection

The promotion, protection, and enhancement of human rights in Jamaica was a primary consideration of the current Government“, Jamaica’s Minister of Justice, the Hon. Delroy Chuck said Tuesday.

To this extent, all fundamental rights were guaranteed by the Constitution and they would be upheld, the Minister added. He cautioned though that there had to be awareness that “from time to time there are challenges, even when there are safeguards and this Government will not sit on its laurels and allow these fundamental rights to be breached”.
