Hurricane Maria pummels Caribbean island of Dominica as Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico brace for impact
Hurricane Maria slammed into the Caribbean island of Dominica as a Category 5 storm with "merciless" 160 mph winds Monday night, and the storm, deemed "potentially catastrophic" by the National Hurricane Center, is now headed for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Maria is expected to move over the northeastern Caribbean Sea today and is forecast to "remain an extremely dangerous category 4 or 5 hurricane" as it approaches the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.
Devastated Barbuda - CARICOM Delegation continue asssessment
Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Mr. Gaston Browne joined CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell of Grenada, and Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on a tour of the hurricane ravaged island of Barbuda, Wednesday.
Hurricane Irma destroyed or damaged more than 90 percent of Barbuda’s houses and the entire population has since been transferred to Antigua.
CARIFESTA XIII ends in true Regional integration style
The Region’s cultural performers transformed the Kensington Oval in Barbados into a sea of Regional integration as they brought the curtains down on CARIFESTA XIII, Sunday night. The Closing Ceremony for the ten-day festival featured performances from some of the region’s top music and dance groups, steel bands, and individual artistes, while delegates and patrons partied to the regional cultural mix.
