CCJ Symposium programme

The Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, in collaboration with the High Commission of Canada, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the International Labour Organization, the Organization of American States, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme, is hosting a symposium on Wednesday afternoon entitled ‘Advancing the Case for Regionalism and Indigenous Jurisprudence: Positive Dialogue to Promote Accession to the Caribbean Court of Justice’, at the Noor Hassanali Auditorium of the Faculty of Law at St. Augustine. The symposium began at 1.00 and concludes at 6.00 pm.

There will be two panel discussions:

Panel 1: Theme: Experience of other Commonwealth countries which have replaced the Privy Council and the effect on their respective justice systems

Experts on this panel will be M. Benoit Pelletier, Constitutional Expert, Canada; The Hon. Justice John Alexander Logan RFD, Australia; and Mr. Reginald Armour S.C.,representing the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago. This session will be moderated by Mr. Mark Guthrie, Legal Adviser at the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Panel 2: Theme: Quality and effectiveness of the CCJ

Experts on this panel will be Professor Rose-Marie Antoine, Dean, Faculty of Law, UWI, St. Augustine; The Hon. Justice Denys Barrow CBE, SC, Belize; and Mr. Dante Negro,  Director of the Department of International Law, OAS. This session will be moderated by Mrs. Alicia Elias-Roberts, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Law, UWI, St. Augustine.
