Haitians observe Day of Remembrance

President of Haiti H.E.  Michel Martelly, accompanied by the First Lady Mrs. Sophia Martelly, the Prime Minister Mr. Evans Paul, the First Minister  Ms. Florence Duperval Guillaume, members of the various state institutions, the religious community, civil society, the diplomatic and consular corps and representatives of international organizations attended the official commemoration on Monday, January 12, 2014, the 5th anniversary of the earthquake that had affecte the country in 2010 .

The Presidential Couple laid a wreath at the monument erected in memory of the victims of the devastating earthquake. The ceremony was punctuated by moments of reflection, songs, testimonies and peace and solidarity messages.
In his speech for the occasion, the Head of State reminded the Haitian people that they needed to continue to cultivate the spirit of support, solidarity and unity that prevailed in the country in the aftermath of the earthquake .

President Martelly took the opportunity, on behalf of the Haitian people to, once again, thank the international community for its indispensable help in this tragedy.
In addition, the President  called for calm by all Haitians who believe in change. He invited them to think about the welfare of their homeland and end the infighting that only tear downn the Haitian social fabric.

On 12 January 2010, Haiti lost more than three hundred thousand sons and daughters  during the devastating earthquake. Five years later, the entire nation continues to honor the memory of the fallen.
