CDEMA implements post-Hurricane Irma legacy project in Antigua and Barbuda

Barbados — In the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria which significantly impacted the islands of the Caribbean in September 2017, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) launched the “CDEMA Legacy Project” to support the recovery and reconstruction efforts in Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, British Virgin Islands (BVI), and Turks & Caicos Islands.

Emphasis is placed on assisting single, female-headed families, the elderly, and people with physical and mental challenges.

CARICOM Chairman leads delegation to hurricane ravaged Dominica

CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell (2nd right) led a regional delegation to hurricane-ravaged Dominica on Tuesday, and met with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit (right).

The Chairman’s delegation included (from right) CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Dr. Warren Smith, Executive Director of the Regional Security System (RSS) Captain Errington Shurland, and Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Ronald Jackson.

Disciplined Forces trained for the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit in Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados May 30, 2017 – 31 participants from the disciplined forces, including police, military and fire services are taking part in the annual CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) training, which is being held at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Coordinating Unit and the Headquarters of the Regional Security System (RSS) in Barbados from May 29 – June 2, 2017.

The CDRU is a specialised humanitarian response team equipped to provide assistance to any of the eighteen CDEMA Participating States, affected by natural or technological hazard.

CARICOM focuses on disaster risk management in agriculture planning

Natural hazards such as drought, hurricanes, earthquakes and floods have had devastating impacts on the socioeconomic and environmental landscape of the Caribbean within the last decade. The agriculture sector has not been spared this dislocation and devastation. This, in conjunction with the negative impacts of climate change and the increased vulnerability to natural disasters, have propelled the Region to put measures in place to respond more effectively to these challenges with bold, decisive, yet well-ordered strategic planning.
