CARICOM welcomes new Chilean Ambassador

Massive fire besieges Chile for third day; 15 dead, 500 hurt

SG praises CARICOM-Chile co-operation

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque hailed CARICOM-Chile co-operation as a model for South-South co-operation.
At a meeting with Chilean Foreign Minister His Excellency Heraldo Muñoz in Santiago on the first day of an official visit to the country, Ambassador LaRocque said the co-operation was “strong and meaningful” and was making an impact in the Community.

Database launched to analyze impact of climate change on Caribbean coasts

SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC – The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has collaborated with the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment and the University of Cantabria in launching a database that would analyze the impact of climate change on Caribbean coasts.
On Wednesday, ECLAC said regional countries could improve coastal planning and develop preventive measures to adapt to the effects of climate change using the database.

CARIBBEAN-POPULATION-Conference to be held on population and development in the Caribbean

SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC – The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host the first meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The  August 12-15 conference will be opened in the presence of the Presidents of Uruguay and Ecuador, José Mujica and Rafael Correa, respectively, executive secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena, and executive director of UNFPA, Babatunde Osotimehin.

ECLAC predicts 2% growth in 2013

SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC – The United Nation’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) says the Caribbean is expected to maintain “the slow upward trend in growth observed in previous years” to reach 2.0 percent in 2013.
In its Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean 2013, released here on Wednesday, ECLAC said growth in Latin America and the Caribbean, on a whole, will reach 3.0 percent in 2013, similar to last year’s growth rate.

CARIBBEAN-ECONOMY-OAS says drug problem affects “pillar of development” in the Caribbean

SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC - The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, says that the drug problem affects the “pillars of development” in Latin America and Caribbean.

In presenting a report here on the drug problem in the region, to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Insulza underscored what he described as a fact that “violence is what most worries the population in terms of drugs.

Large earthquake strikes off coast of Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile -- The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.5 earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile. The quake was recorded at 5:49 a.m. local time (EDT; 0949 GMT) Monday, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), some 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the city of Puerto Quellon. No tsunami warning was issued. Chile's naval seismology office says it was not felt on land. U.S. seismologists originally estimated the magnitude at 6.8.

ECLAC says region receives “new record high” of foreign direct investment in 2012

SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC - The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) says the region received a “new record high” of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2012. According to the ECLAC report “Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2012”, the region received US$173.3 billion dollars of FDI (6.7 per cent more than in 2011), “despite an external context characterized by shrinking FDI flows worldwide”.
