KINGSTON, Jamaica - News from Trinidad & Tobago read: "Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders met in Port-of-Spain this past Tuesday and agreed to the formation of a Commission on the Economy as they seek to revive the ailing economies of the 15-member regional grouping."
CARICOM Commission on the Economy, said Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who chaired the CARICOM Bureau meeting, "should address the priority areas for fiscal sustainability, resource mobilisation as well as critical economic infrastructure services, particularly energy and ICT (Information Communication Technology)."

CTO head wants legislation to regulate waste disposal in Caribbean waters

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius, CMC – Secretary General of the Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), Hugh Riley, Wednesday called for legislation to regulate the disposal of waste in Caribbean waters.
Addressing the second Sustainable Conference, Riley said the Caribbean had a responsibility to protect and preserve its water resources.
He said that water was at the core of the Caribbean’s efforts at sustainability and that it was important that the necessary policies be put in place to safeguard this vital resource.

Caribbean community appeals to global leaders for help at U.N. General Assembly

Caribbean leaders are using their spotlight on the global stage at the United Nations General Assembly to call for slavery reparations, an end to the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba and to highlight the development challenges impacting vulnerable nations. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday also used the moment to seek world support for his tiny Eastern Caribbean nation’s ongoing trade battle with the United States over online gambling.

CARICOM countries pledge to uphold rights of disabled citizens

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries have pledged their commitments to ensuring the rights of the disabled community in the region noting also that internationally agreed development goals cannot be achieved without incorporating persons with disabilities.
“They experience disproportionately high rates of poverty and are more likely to be marginalised and excluded from education, employment, healthcare support systems, recreation and the physical environment,” said Barbados Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Maxine McClean.

Sustainable development high on Caribbean’s agenda for annual UN debate

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) annual general debate begins here on Tuesday with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders among the international political personalities expected to address the global body.
The Caribbean has indicated it would use the forum to raise a number of issues pertinent to the region, including reparation for the slave trade, the environment including the impact of climate change, the global economic crisis as well as sustainable development.

CARIBBEAN-DRUGS - Five hundred kilogrammes of cocaine seized in Caribbean Sea

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, CMC – Honduras Minister of Defence, Marlon Pascua, says the Honduran Navy has seized at least 500 kilogrammes of cocaine in the Caribbean Sea.
On Wednesday, he said two people have been arrested on suspicion of shipping the drug by boat.
The Defence Minister told reporters that the shipment was headed to Honduras’ northern Bay Islands department for later transshipment to the United States.The two unidentified suspects were from the department of Islas de la Bahia, along Honduras’ Caribbean coast.

Two Caribbean countries included in 20 regional countries encouraging female entrepreneurs

WASHINGTON, CMC – Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are the only Caribbean Community (CARICOM) states ranked among 20 Latin America and Caribbean countries that provide the best environments for female entrepreneurs.
The Women’s Entrepreneurial VentureScope (WEVentureScope) index was released by the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a member of the Inter-American Development Bank Group, and developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is celebrating 40 years of existence. But who is really celebrating?
Certainly not the masses of Caribbean peoples, plagued with high levels of unemployment, crime, debt and anxiety about the future.
Officialdom is celebrating, the small band of government leaders, regional civil servants and technocrats who interact with the organization with some regularity.
But should more people in the region be celebrating? The short answer to this question is yes.
