The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community Mr Edwin Carrington has extended congratulations to Jamaica on their historic achievement of qualifying for the 1998 World Cup Finals in France.
Following is the text of the Secretary-General's message:
The Caribbean Community extends its heartiest congratulations to the Jamaican people on the achievement of their magnificent soccer team. The entire Caribbean Community celebrates this unprecedented achievement.
Their historic qualification for the 1998 World Cup, the first ever by a CARICOM country, could not have come at a more propitious time as we in the Community will be celebrating in 1998 the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas.
The people of the Caribbean accepts this gift as yet another in the list of outstanding contributions by Jamaica to the Region. May the perseverance, commitment, dedication and harnessing of skill displayed by coaches Brown, Simoes and the players serve as an example to the Community of what can be achieved when these elements are applied in unison.
Well done Jamaica! Congratulations!
