Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts in the Region see the maximising of ICTs as a necessary instrument in unifying the Region, while keeping Member States abreast with extra-regional developments. To this end, an ICT seminar will take place on October 14th in Barbados, where CARICOM ICT experts will meet under the theme "Communication and Technology for Development."

The seminar will explore ways to mobilise ICTs for Caribbean Development, and address communication challenges of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). In examining these challenges, as well as potential benefits of ICTs for Caribbean Development, seminar participants will give specific attention to the introduction of ICTs in the services sector. This is with a view to stepping up trade in services when the CSME takes off.

Issues pertaining to Intellectual Property Rights, Internet governance and consumer protection will be explored in the context of creating an enabling regional legal and regulatory environment for ICTs and development.

In addition, the ICT experts hope to formulate mechanisms to establish closer collaboration with professional bodies, non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), the private sector and civil society in the development of ICTs, towards the construction of a Caribbean Information Society. The meeting will also be briefed on developments in the preparation for the second phase of the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS).

This ICT seminar forms part of a planned series of public education and advocacy programmes that will be implemented as part of the CARICOM ICT and Development regional strategy and brings together experts in various areas of ICT development.
