CARICOM at forefront of sustainable development issues

Sep 27, 2015

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque and his delegation in the Plenary of the United Nations Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, held at UN Headquarters, New York, 25-27 September 2015.

The Summit had as its main goal the official adoption of a new historic agenda entitled: “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” which was agreed upon by the 193 Member States of the United Nations, and includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what they did not achieve.

They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.

The Goals and targets will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.

Climate change, a debt relief strategy, and re-examination of the bases for graduation from access to concessional finance for CARICOM Member  countries are among  key sustainable development issues for the Caribbean Community.
