CARICOM and Pacific Community Secretariats collaborate to mark end of UN Year of the SIDS
Monday January 26 marked the end of the United Nations Year of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Caribbean Community and Pacific Community Secretariats agreed to stage a joint social media campaign this week to mark the occasion and to signal the start of closer collaboration by their communications teams beyond the declared Year.
Communications teams from the two Secretariats have posted joint messages on their Facebook and Twitter pages and have invited the people of their respective regions to visit and like the other region’s pages. A video ‘shout-out’ from CARICOM to the people of the Pacific Community was also shared.
The countries of the Caribbean Community and the Pacific Community are among the 39 Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are recognised as having a unique set of challenges because of small size and being vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters.
To draw attention to their special development needs the UN declared 2014 the Year of the SIDS and the highlight of the Year was the International SIDS Conference held in Samoa in the Pacific Community, in September.
Reflecting on the Year, Director of Sustainable Development at the CARICOM Secretariat Mr. Garfield Barnwell said CARICOM was heartened by the solidarity shown by the International Community. He, however, noted that there was considerable unfinished business for many SIDS, and that energy, food and water security feature highly for those in the Caribbean. He said the Region was determined to find creative ways to overcome the challenges and achieve growth.
