The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago will hold a Regional Symposium addressing Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue, 17-18 April 2023, at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad and Tobago.
A Regional Symposium on “Violence as a Public Health Issue – The Crime Challenge” will be held at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on the 17-18 April, 2023.
The Symposium will be hosted by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr the Hon. Keith Rowley and will be attended by CARICOM Heads of Government.
In June 2020, the CARPHA Medical Microbiology Laboratory (CMML) processed the largest number of samples – an unprecedented achievement in the history of the organisation. The laboratory received a total of 3,250 samples, representing an average of more than 150 samples per business day.
Secretary General of the Caribbean Community Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said the Region has done fairly well in containing COVID-19. He was speaking during the virtual Handing-over Ceremony of Chairmanship of the Conference of the Heads of Government of CARCIOM on Friday, 3 July.

CARPHA Medical Microbiology Laboratory (CMML), as the regional reference laboratory, currently conducts tests for suspected COVID-19 cases for Member States using the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended testing protocol.At present, samples can only be sent to CARPHA from the designated national public health laboratory in a country.
The Region’s Health Ministers will hold an emergency meeting on Monday 3 February on the novel Coronavirus which the World Health Organisation has now classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The novel Coronavirus outbreak which originated in Wahun City, Hubei Province, China, started in December 2019 and, up to this week about eight thousand cases have been laboratory-confirmed globally, with eighty-two cases confirmed outside of China.
Today, The UWI will host a Vice-Chancellor’s Forum which will offer informed analysis and perspectives. The programme will include remarks from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and feature UWI health experts along with Dr Joy St. John, CARPHA’s Executive Director.It begins at 1:00 pm (Jamaica)/2:00 pm (Eastern Caribbean) at The UWI Regional Headquarters, and will be carried live on UWItv’s cable television channel and livestreamed on www.uwitv.org.
The European Union has provided the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) with a grant of 4.1 million euro (US$4.5M) to continue supporting efforts to combat mosquito borne diseases in the Caribbean Region.
The assistance will be channelled through a four-year health strengthening programme designed to further improve the prevention, detection and control of outbreaks of mosquito borne diseases such as zika and dengue.
This because as before, the pre-conditions of abundant mosquito vector levels still exist, and increased levels of dengue are being reported in Latin America and elsewhere.
Minister of Health, the Hon. Dr. Christopher Tufton, is encouraging other Caribbean countries to join forces and replicate the ‘Jamaica Moves’ campaign into ‘Caribbean Moves’, with the objective of reducing the region’s growing rate of persons living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Jamaica Moves is part of the National Strategy and Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs, which covers seven main categories of diseases – cardiovascular conditions, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, sickle cell, mental health disorders and chronic renal failure.
