CARIBBEAN COURT OF JUSTICE PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN HAITI
The Caribbean Court of Justice in its continued Public Education Programme, on the 22-23 May, 2003 launched its public education programme in Haiti.
Haiti is the newest Member State embraced as a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The launch and first round of the education programme in Haiti, targeted the Judiciary and Magistracy.
The Haitian Judiciary was given the opportunity to discuss the CCJ in the context of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
The CARICOM team was headed by Mr. Sheldon McDonald. Other members included Mr. Duke Pollard, Director of the CARICOM Secretariat Legislative Drafting Facility, Ms. Desiree Field-Ridley, Advisor on Single Market and Economy, Mr. Keith Sobion, Principal of Norman Manley Law School, Ms. Carol Collins, Communications Consultant assigned to Haiti and two Communications specialists, Ms. Rose Blenman and Ms. Marcia Hope of the Secretariat.
The team in collaboration with the Office of the American States (OAS) special mission to Haiti met with the Minister of Justice, the Haitian Bar Association, the Supreme Court Judges and Magistrates.
Haiti’s official language is French. The Agreement Establishing the Caribbean Court of Justice was translated in the native language and made available at the meeting for discussions.
The Judiciary and Magistracy, were educated on their rights as CARICOM nationals. Every national of CARICOM has rights and privileges enshrined in the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas including the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, for him or her to enjoy.
The two-day discussion was met with a lot of interaction on both sides of the table. The days’ meetings were described as fruitful by both the CARICOM and Haitian delegations. Many questions and clarifications were sought and were settled before the conclusion of the meetings.
Communication for both sides was made possible through interpreters, provided by the OAS.
Wider public education in Haiti is expected to commence shortly.
