CARICOM Attorneys-General discuss implications of Myrie Ruling

CCJ cementing rules-based system in CARICOM – Secretary-General LaRocque

CCJ president speaks on diversity in selection of judges

BOSTON, CMC – President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Sir Dennis Byron, says a conscious and forthright statement of dedication to achieving diversity should be noted when the Trinidad-based regional court is considering the diversity of its judicial appointments.
Addressing the International Bar Association (IBA) 2013 Conference here, Sir Dennis questioned how the CCJ, established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the region’s highest court, takes into consideration the diversity of its judicial candidates.

CCJ judgement will shift way business is conducted in Community - CARICOM Secretary-General

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen Greater Georgetown, Guyana)      Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, has called on CARICOM Member States that have not taken the necessary steps to make the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) their final court of appeal, to do so.
Ambassador LaRocque was speaking during a conference at the University of the West Indies, Regional Headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday hosted by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES).

Regional support for CCJ a must

ROSEAU, Dominica, Barbados Nation– Prominent regional jurist, Sir Brian Alleyne, says he is optimistic that Caribbean countries will come soon to the realisation that they all need to join the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
But Sir Brian, the former Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, says it is also necessary for the regional countries to allow for much debate on the court that was established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the regional final court.

CCJ head defends integrity of court

(Jamaica Gleaner) The President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has responded to concerns that the court is susceptible to political interference because of the small space in which it operates. Delivering a public lecture at the University of the West Indies last evening, Sir Dennis Byron, said he was aware of opposition to Jamaica’s adoption of the CCJ as its final court. However, he says concerns about the ability of the court’s judges to remain independent because of issues of familiarity are unfounded.

Wickham: Time to join CCJ

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - It is time that Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago fully sign on to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as their final court of appeal.
This is coming from political scientist Peter Wickham, who thinks that both countries have a moral duty to accept the court.

RULES OF THE CCJ TO BE TOP PRIORITY AFTER INAUGURATION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Judges of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will forge ahead to complete the crafting of rules to engage and govern the Court's proceedings after its grand inauguration on 16 April 2005 in Trinidad and Tobago.

At a press conference in the twin-Island republic on the eve of the inauguration, President of the CCJ, Hon. Mr Justice Michael de la Bastide heralded the inaugural event as the celebration of the birth of a Regional institution whose gestation spans over three decades.
