Cable & Wireless to invest $400 million regionally

Sep 13, 2008

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: Richard Dodd, Chief Executive Officer of Cable & Wireless (Caribbean), has disclosed that the firm will invest over US$400 million in telecommunications development in the Caribbean region over the next three years.

With its transformation programme officially launched in May, Dodd said Cable & Wireless is repositioning itself for an era of competition, especially in the area of “world-class customer service”. “Cable & Wireless has been a staple in the Caribbean for more than 100 years and the company intends to be around long into the future to bring our customers the superior brand of telecommunications products and services that has helped to put the Caribbean ahead of many countries in telecommunications infrastructure,” he said.

Dodd acknowledged that Cable & Wireless had not always met customers demand and still had some inconsistencies in service. He noted that the company is proud to continue to deliver a profitable and sustainable business.

“It also gives us a sense of pride that we have contributed to building superior, resilient networks that keep the people of this region in touch with the world,” he said.

“Our sense of pride also extends to the areas which we have supported throughout the region as part of our social responsibility, including education and culture, sport and community activities.”

However, he added, the business will not only rely on its history, but intends to build on its legacy to benefit customers, colleagues and the larger region.

“Our customers, colleagues and other stakeholders have told us that we need to do many things differently to deliver a vastly superior service,” he said.

“We have listened and many changes can be expected as we continue to develop new services and as we continue our work in the communities of the Caribbean and on the training and development of our employees.”

One area of development will be the introduction of 3G platforms, which will offer customers superior capabilities, capacity and speed. This enhanced network will roll out first in Jamaica.

“This is only one area of our new investment and commitment to the region. But as we progress with our transformation programme, our customers will see further tangible benefits from doing business with us,” he said.
