Environmentalist backs CARICOM position on toxic shipment

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A local Marine Biologist has joined calls for the stoppage of a shipment of toxic waste through Caribbean waters.
Last week CARICOM chairman, St Lucia’s Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony, highlighted as a grave concern the passage of high level waste through the Caribbean Sea.
Barbuda based marine biologist John Mussington says any mishap involving the shipment could spell BIG trouble for the countries’ tourism industry.

Stanford makes top 2012 FBI cases

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has listed Allen Stanford’s case as one of its most significant for 2012. Stanford, who headed a global financial titan and many businesses in Antigua, was brought down by US investigators looking into a US $7 billion fraud scheme. He was convicted and, in June 2012, sentenced to 110 years in jail for running a Ponzi scheme.

US protests $21m in gaming sanctions

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The US has protested to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against Antigua & Barbuda’s attempt to enforce its annual 21 million US dollar judgement against Washington. The judgement was awarded by the WTO, which has declared US cross-border gaming laws illegal.

New World Bank funded project to help unemployed people

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Antigua and Barbuda government says it is designing a project that offers temporary economic relief to unemployed people in the country.
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said that the three year project, which is being established with technical and financial assistance from the World Bank, will benefit at least 1,200 low-income unemployed people between the ages 17 and 50.

Opposition leader not impressed with ministerial re-alignments

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The promised ministerial re-alignment of the Baldwin Spencer-led administration has done nothing to reassure the opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) that the quality of the governance in Antigua & Barbuda will be improved.

PM re-aligns Cabinet portfolios

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has announced what he described as ‘realignments’ to a number of cabinet portfolios. In his New Year’s Day message, the Antigua & Barbuda leader said the changes would affect the ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Public Works, Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture. He said they were all part of government’s plans to improve the management of the country.

The use of energy in its various forms is essential to all forms of economic and social development and this year’s celebration of CARICOM Energy Week provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the uses of energy in Antigua and Barbuda and to develop strategies for promoting its efficient and sustainable use. The theme adopted for this week’s activities is “Changing Energy Habits today for Antigua and Barbuda’s tomorrow”. This is derived from the overall CARICOM theme which is “Sustainable Energy Powering a Green Economy”.

Barbuda gets fishing boost from Japan

CODRINGTON, Barbuda, Friday August 12, 2011 – The fishing industry in Barbuda has received a boost following the construction of an Artisanal Fisheries Complex. Through the project, fish and lobster products from Barbuda will be able to satisfy the international quality control requirements to export to European Union countries.

A dedication ceremony for the $30 million dollars complex, which is the fifth artisanal Fisheries Facility to be built in the twin-island state under the Government of Japan’s Grant Aid Scheme, was held this week.

Caribbean community (CARICOM) electoral observer mission to Antigua and Barbuda : preliminary statement

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) On the invitation of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, the Caribbean Community mounted a CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission to monitor the election system and processes, as well as the conduct of the General Elections held on 12 March 2009.

The eleven member Observer Mission led by Mr. Noel Lee, former Director of Elections of Jamaica was drawn from the following CARICOM Member States:

• Barbados;
• Guyana;
• Haiti;
• Jamaica;
• Saint Lucia; and,
• Suriname.

Antigua-Barbuda to embrace ICT-based knowledge economy
