Mighty Sparrow doing well – says daughter

NEW YORK, CMC - The family of Slinger Francisco, widely regarded as the “Calypso King of the World”, says the “Mighty Sparrow” is responding very well to treatment.
Sparrow who was admitted to a New York hospital two weeks ago is no longer in a coma.
“He should be up and about soon but not too soon,” said his daughter Nicole Robinson.

Brazil cancels advance team trip for state visit to U.S.

BRASILIA, (Reuters) – Brazil has canceled a trip by an advance team to Washington to prepare for a visit by President Dilma Rousseff that might be called off after revelations the United States spied on her private communications.
Brazil’s presidential palace said yesterday it canceled a trip by an advance team of logistical planners, security personnel and protocol officers that was due to leave for Washington this weekend to start preparing the Oct. 23 state visit. No reason was given for the cancellation.

NEW YORK, CMC – A Grenadian American legislator has added his voice to those condemning an incident that resulted in the death of a 16-month-old toddler of Trinidadian parentage on Sunday night. “Like most New Yorkers, I am horrified to hear of the murder of Antiq Hennis,” New York City Councilman Jumaane D. Williams, co-chair of the New York City Council's Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, told the Caribbean Media Corporation on Thursday. “His death is a stain on the City's soul,” added Williams, who represents the predominantly Caribbean 45th Council District in Brooklyn.

WASHINGTON, CMC – A new World Bank report states that with the exception of young men, most people in the Caribbean and Latin America are living much longer than they did 40 years ago.
The report, “The Global Burden of Disease: Generating Evidence, Guiding Policy,” released here on Wednesday by the World Bank and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), also says the mortality rate in the region has dropped by at least 80 percent for children 4 years old or younger and by more than 50 percent for women between the ages of 20 and 44.

CARICOM and Cuba look to active role in post 2015 Agenda talks at the UN

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean should take an active role at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) debate on the post 2015 Agenda.
This was the view expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana the Honourable Caroline Rodrigues-Birkett as she addressed the Opening Ceremony in Grenada of the Fourth Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba on Thursday evening. The discussions take place on Friday.

I wish to thank the Government and People of Grenada for their warm hospitality and join my colleagues in echoing appreciation for being in Grenada today among great company.  As we gather on the eve of the Fourth CARICOM-Cuba Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, there are several events that are occurring at the national, regional, hemispheric, and global levels that are guaranteed to usher in changes that will require our countries to adapt to the ever evolving geopolitical environment. 

CARICOM and Cuba Foreign Ministers get together in Grenada

A special retreat of CARICOM’s Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), preceded Friday’s meeting.

As Obama pushes to punish Syria, lawmakers fear deep US involvement

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama’s efforts to persuade the US Congress to back his plan to attack Syria met with skepticism yesterday from lawmakers in his own Democratic Party who expressed concern the United States would be dragged into a new Middle East conflict.
“There is a lot of skepticism,” said Representative Jim Moran after taking part in a 70-minute phone briefing for Democratic lawmakers by Obama’s top national security aides about the response to a chemical weapons attack that US officials say killed 1,429 people on the outskirts of Damascus.
