T&T and Venezuela hold energy talks

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The Second Meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) for the Unitisation of Cross Border Hydrocarbon Reservoirs between T&T and Venezuela was held at the offices of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs in Port of Spain on July 23 and 24. The meeting involved delegations led by the co-chairperson from Venezuela, Angel González Saltrόn, Vice Minister of Hydrocarbons, People’s Ministry for Energy and Petroleum and his counterpart and co-chairman from T&T, Selwyn Lashley, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy.

International trends consultant to address tourism conference

NEW YORK, CMC – International trends consultant, Daniel Levine, will deliver the keynote address at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s (CTO) major State of the Industry Conference in Martinique from October 15-18.
Levine is scheduled to deliver the “ultimate lessons on perfect visitor experiences and authenticity to hundreds of the Caribbean’s most influential tourism minds at the region’s leading tourism conference.”

Slavery compensation: Caribbean nations propose Mau Mau model

Leaders of more than a dozen Caribbean countries are launching a united effort to seek compensation from three European nations for what they say is the lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade. The Caribbean Community, a regional organisation, has taken up the cause of compensation for slavery and the genocide of native peoples and is preparing for what would likely be a drawn-out battle with the governments of Britain, France and the Netherlands.

World Bank backs Caribbean’s steady poverty reduction

WASHINGTON, CMC – The World Bank has committed US$11.8 billion in the 2013 fiscal year to support Latin America and the Caribbean resilience in the midst of global turmoil.
The Washington-based financial institution said this includes resources from its International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).

ECLAC predicts 2% growth in 2013

SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC – The United Nation’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) says the Caribbean is expected to maintain “the slow upward trend in growth observed in previous years” to reach 2.0 percent in 2013.
In its Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean 2013, released here on Wednesday, ECLAC said growth in Latin America and the Caribbean, on a whole, will reach 3.0 percent in 2013, similar to last year’s growth rate.

ECLAC says equality “guiding principle” for a paradigm change in the Caribbean

CARACAS, Venezuela, CMC - The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) says equality is the “guiding principle” for a paradigm change in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Congresswoman welcomes plans to aid Caribbean immigrants

NEW YORK, CMC – Caribbean American Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke has welcomed a plan by New York City to aid undocumented Caribbean immigrants. New York City officials say the city will spend US$18 million to help undocumented Caribbean and other immigrants find jobs. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a mayoral candidate, said the money will fund adult education classes and legal services that the US federal government requires immigrants to take to qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Liat owners mull proposal to include Venezuela

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The shareholder governments of the regional airline, Liat, are discussing proposals that would allow Venezuela to have an interest in the airline, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced. Skerrit said Caracas has expressed an interest in investing in the regional airline company and that a draft agreement has already been provided to shareholders for their consideration.
