The 19th edition of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) will be launched on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, setting the stage for the event which will be held in St. Kitts and Nevis from 29 September – 3 October. CWA 2025 will be held under the theme ‘Sowing Change, Harvesting Resilience: Transforming Our Caribbean Food Systems for 2025 and Beyond’.
CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General, Dr. Wendell Samuel, has called for cooperation to shape a future in which “our environment, including oceans, is not only protected, but fully leveraged for the benefit of our people and future generations.”
Preparations are underway to host the 18th edition of CARICOM’s premier agricultural event, the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA), from 7-11 October at the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
This year’s theme ‘Climate-Smart Agriculture for a Sustainable Future’ is aligned with the objectives of the 25 by 2025 Initiative to reduce the Region’s food import bill by 25 per cent by 2025 and to transform regional food systems to be more resilient and sustainable.
The Caribbean Region faces existential threats, including biodiversity loss which continue to be a major challenge for global leaders and conservationists. Many plant and animal species in the Region are critically endangered, including the Grenada dove, the hawksbill turtle, the Antiguan racer, and the Saint Lucian racer—the rarest snake in the world. These are just a few among the over 200 critically endangered species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and plants in the Caribbean Region.
A major deliverable of the Special Ministerial Taskforce on Food Production and Food Security (MTF) is to assist with the de-risking of the sector through the provision of agricultural insurance for farmers within the CARICOM Region. It has truly been a long, but rewarding effort from all who have been involved in the process which has led us to where we are today. The CARICOM Secretariat co-facilitated a workshop in Grenada on 12 March that was aimed at helping to create legal frameworks and institutional guidelines to implement the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora. The CITES of Wild Fauna and Flora programme aims to safeguard endangered animals and plants from harmful international trade, thus ensuring their survival.
