Paulwell Reaffirms Number Portability By May 31, 2015

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell, has reiterated Government’s commitment to implement number portability in Jamaica by May 31, next year.

“We have now gazetted all the rules dealing with number portability and I have mandated the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) and all the providers that come May 31, 2015, we will have full portability,” Minister Paulwell said.

New focus on open-source software for SMEs

Free and open software services has the potential to radically alter the use of proprietary software such as Microsoft products into which regional governments are locked into partnership agreements and which cost taxpayers millions of dollars annually.

This, according to Gary Campbell, the director of technology in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining and doctoral student at the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), who is conducting research to help guide public policy on software use.

Jamaica sets up Internet Exchange Point for Freer, Faster Access

KINGSTON, Jamaica November 14, 2014 – The Jamaican Government  has established an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) which will reduce the cost of  internet use to Jamaicans while having faster access.

Minister of Science and Technology, Phillip Paulwell told the National Medal for Science, Technology and Innovation Awards ceremony on Wednesday, that the IXP, hosted at eGOV Jamaica Limited, will further contribute to the development of a more stable, competitive, cost efficient and robust Information Communication Technology (ICT) and broadband ecosystem in Jamaica.

Young Jamaican team wins AgriHack Talent Caribbean contest at 13th Caribbean Week of Agriculture

And the winner is… Node420, from Jamaica. The team’s ICT application, also called Node420, offers real-time weather analysis and automatic yield forecasts for farmers.

The AgriHack Talent Caribbean contest, organised by CTA and partners, came to a close during the 13th Caribbean Week of Agriculture, held this week in Paramaribo, Suriname. The winning teams designed agricultural apps that can forecast crop yields, improve pest management and put farmers in touch with market outlets.

PAHO to launch mobile app to measure cardiovascular risk

WASHINGTON, Sep. 28, CMC – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will on Monday launch a new app for mobile devices and computers that calculates the risk of cardiovascular disease among Caribbean nationals.

 

The launch will take place in recognition of World Heart Day, celebrated yearly on September 29.

The app is based on a World Health Organization (WHO) formula for estimating cardiovascular risk that is appropriate for most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

MIIC state minister urges youth to choose careers in ICT

Jamaica Set to Launch Internet Exchange Point in August

KINGSTON, Jamaica  – Jamaica is expected to benefit significantly from an Internet exchange point facility, which the ministry of science, technology, energy and mining expects to have in place by August.
The IXP enables Internet traffic-routing within the country where the provision exists, instead of through external providers, as currently is the case with Jamaica.
